Planning and Management of
Bijon Theatre Sayak with its larger involvement in multifarious theatrical activities imbibed the acute problem of a theatre hall on cheap rate specially at north Kolkata. This coupled with the enormous aspiration of the theatre lovers of North Kolkata, inspired Sayak to take a venture to build up a theatre hall for use of group theatres at a convenient rate. Under the financial assistance of M/s Nataraj Enterprise, Bijon Thetare (Accommodation 516) was opened on 31st July’1979 at 5A, Raja Rajkrishna Street, Kolkata – 700 006 in the name of the father of Bengali progressive theatre Bijon Bhattacharya under active planning, execution and management of SAYAK. Since inception, the theatre has been used by several group under the active supervision of Sayak. And now from 2002 Samabay Prayas has been established with the help of other three Group Theatre viz. Theatre Workshop, Sohan and Anya Theatre to look after Bijon Theatre. SAYAK NATYAPATRA A

and preserved some important interviews, discussions, speeches of our
stalwart theatre personalities. Those collections are now regularly published
once in a year in the name of 'Sayak Natyapatra'
since 1992 for all inquisitive theatre workers. The subjective details of the

FALICITATION BY SAYAK With the
advancement of time Sayak felt it necessary to give humble recognition to the
towering personalities of our theatre. So far, Sayak has been able to pay
homage to the following renowned personalities.
SISIR KUMAR BOSE MEMORIAL AWARD Theatre is a composite art and all the branches of performing arts nourish the theatre to get an integrity. Sayak recognizes this truth by introducing an award in the memory of its first Director – Playwright Sisir Kr. Bose to give tribute to those personalities of allied performing arts since 1992. (Award money Rs. 10,000/-)

SENGUPTA MEMORIAL AWARD Theatre is fully
dependent on its back stage workers. This truth recognized by Sayak by
introducing an award for Back Stage workers in the memory of its charterd member as well as Stage Manager Dipankar Sengupta since 2002.( Award money Rs.10,001/-)
SAYAK NATYABAKTRITAMALA Since 1995 Sayak has introduced a circle of
lectures on various topics of dramaturgy viz. stage craft, direction, acting , music, light etc. to enrich the thoughts as well
as to establish the utility of theatre in our society. Uptill
now, Sayak is able to organize 43 lectures, which are as follows:-
Festival of Selected Bengali plays Sayak has been organizing the “Festival of selected Bengali Plays” with an enthuastic attitude since 1998. On previous 6 occasions 10 groups from different parts of Bengal. as well as Orissa, Delhi, & M.P. participated in each festival, selected meticulously on merit by a panel of distinguished personalities of contemporary theatre from at least 100 entries. Awards (Award money 78,000/-) have been given to encourage the participating groups, directors, actors, designers as per judgment of the distinguished panel. Anup Shankar memorial Fund On 24/11/1996
while returning from North Bengal (Balurghat ) after show of
“Karnabati”, Sayak’s Bus
fell in to an Accident near Berhempur . Two of Sayak’s
member viz. Light Technician Sankar Gupta and
Actor Anup
Mukherjee were spot dead and bus driver Baidyanath Pal was
seriously injured .To help the bereaved families of the deceased and injured driver , formed “Anup Shankar Memorial Fund”. The fellow theatre groups,
theatre workers and the common people donated generously in this fund. Renowned director Habib Tanveer staged two shows
of his famous production “Charandas Chor”, to raise the
fund .The family of Sankar Gupta was given a sum of Rs. 1,40,000/- , the
family of Anup Mukherjee Rs. 64,000/- and the injured Driver Rs.
20,000/- from the collected amount. Sayak received a wide range of applause
from all corners for this effort. WORKSHOP ON NEUROTHEATRICS Sayak arranged a two days workshop on Neurotheatrics for the graduate theatre workers of the State at Minerva Theatre on and from March 26 to 28’ 2010. Dr. Sajal Bandopadhyay, Principal, Centre for Cultivation of Cognitive science discussed on the following studies with active Co-ordination of Director , Sayak. Total 26 student have been participated in the said workshop . Anup Motilal, Director of Culture. Govt. of West Bengal handed over the certificate to the participants. Subject: Human System’s Intelligence , Human Sensation & Perception,
Pattern generation & Identification, Sensory Signal Detection practice, Neurotheatrics an intelligent control , Interactive
learning , SUMMER CAMP FOR CHILDREN Sayak arranged a fun affordable 10 days
Summer Theatre Camp for Kids & Teens (ages 6 to 14) from June ‘ 2 to June’ 12’2009 at Minerva Theatre. Budding 38
artists explored the magic of theatre by performing a play of their creation.
Participants were also learned and developed their skills in acting, dance,
music puppet etc under the professional Theatre teacher viz. Moloy Mitra (Camp Director), Meghnad Bhattacharya (Concept and control), Manoj Mitra (Acting), Debasish Majumder (Script Writting), Murari Roy Chowdhury (Music), Bijoy Lakshmi Barman
(Recitation), Niranjan Goswami
(Mime), Kabir sen Barat
(Dance), Ashok Pramanik (Light), Panchanan Manna (Make-up), Subrata
sen (Art). CHILDREN THEATRE :: JUNIOR SAYAK Since
July’2009, Sayak introduced and organized a regular theatre training for children ages 6 to 16 at Bijon Theatre
on every Saturday
Sunday under the eminent Theatre Teachers. At present 60 students (in two groups)
are exploring and
developing their creativity through this workshop. The students have already
produced their own four productions as follows –
